We were playing around on the Spring Creek Trail way too
early in the season.
“Hey, Sundance,” I called over the C.B. “I’m stuck.
Come pull me out.”
You’ll have to pull me out first. I can’t even get to where you are.” His Bronco was sideways on that same
road. The road leaned toward the cliff,
so any attempt to drive forward just caused the vehicle to slide closer to the
edge.
“Winch time!”
I pulled the cable from my Warn X8000i and tied to a tree
ahead of me while Sundance pulled the cable from his Warn 12,000 and tied to a
tree near his vehicle.
The proper method is to wrap a tree-saver strap around the
tree and put the cable hook into the straps loop. On ice, the vehicle will pull straight as
long as you do not give the vehicle enough gas to make the tires spin. Once the tires spin, the vehicle will go
sideways.
Keep in mind that winch cables can be deadly if they come
loose from the anchor point, so stand away from the cable. Lay a blanket or heavy jacket across the
cable to act as a weight if the cable should come loose.
