The WHITE RIM TRAIL

Those who first explored it during the mid-1800s, considered it to be “worthless”.  They could not believe there was any possible purpose for which it was suited.  In the late-1800s, outlaws discovered it suited their purpose just fine.  It served as a hideout for Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch during times when they needed to be in a place where the law would not follow.  During the mid-1900s, when our country needed to make bombs, it served a new purpose when it was found to contain Uranium in abundance.  Those of us who live in the 1990s have found another purpose for that part of the country.  It serves as a vacation getaway to 4Wheelers, mountain bikers, hikers, horseback riders, white water rafters, and dozens of other recreational sports.

It’s called Canyonlands, a national park established 1964.  It is a place where vertical Canyon walls rise more than 1,000 feet above raging rivers to flat-topped mesas.  Natural arches of all sizes and shapes, some large enough to drive a vehicle across, some taller than any building the state of Utah, are scattered throughout the 350,000 acres of geography contained within the boundaries of the park.
