SAXON MOUNTAIN   -  Campfire Tales - January 1995

I was on my way back from visiting book stores along I-70, when all of a sudden, my Blazer ripped the steering wheel out of my hands and took off for a 4-wheel drive road up Saxon Mountain.  I never saw anything like it.  I heard this thing had a driver control system, but I didn’t know that meant it just takes control of the driver.

I hope you bought that story because my wife didn’t when I showed up an hour late for dinner.  When that one didn’t work, I tried that about aliens kidnapping me and making me show them the turnoff for Saxon Mountain.  They were looking for a good place to have close encounters of the third kind and the captain of the ship liked the name Saxon Mountain.  She didn’t buy that story either and all I got for dinner was grilled cheese and soup.  Oh well, it was worth it.

I got on the Saxon Mountain Road at Georgetown.  Go south from the exit ramp, across Clear Creek, and turn left on Main Street.  Main Street is paved for a short distance, then becomes gravel.  Around the next curve is a sign for Saxon Mountain Road.

The view from the road is fabulous and, except for a few spots in the trees, there was no snow for the first five miles.

Saxon Mountain
The view from the Saxon Mountain Road provides a beautiful view of surrounding mountain tops.  The climb is steep in places with tight switchbacks.  Much easier in low range.
